Love Notes

I recently had the occasion to discuss a book I’d read several years ago entitled, “For the Love of Cities” by Peter Kageyama.  He devotes a chapter in the book to describing “Love Notes,” which are those things “that endear a place to its residents, something that makes them smile or feel at ease, something that provides them with an emotional connection to their place.”  I also attended a presentation by Kageyama and he mentioned some of his favorite love notes:

  • Mice on Main Street in Greenville, SC.  Nine small bronze mice sculptures can be found on Main Street and visitors are given clues to find each one.
  • It's Good to Be Here project in New Orleans.  An artist created temporary notes on the sidewalks to proclaim her love of the city.

    Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, Institute will be offered in a virtual format. We will be offering sessions on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings, from 10:00 – 12:00, from now until October 1, via Zoom.   

    Registering for this Institute will allow you to then register for up to 22 course sessions, according to your needs and your schedule.  If you register here for the full institute, you will then sign up for the individual sessions you want to attend.  Many of the sessions will also be recorded and available after the live session.  These sessions will be listed and noticed through the website.  Attending 20 sessions and completing the assessments will keep you on track for your CMC certification.

    If you are requesting a scholarship, request an invoice.  You will then be sent an invoice with the balance due.  

    You can also register for individual sessions without registering for Institute.  

    Each session will be described, with a suggested year (first year, second year, or third year).

    This session is a keynote and is eligible for both CMC and MMC credit.  All years of Institute are encouraged to attend! This session will be recorded and will be available on demand.

    The Covid-19 pandemic and unrest in America has created a topsy-turvy environment. Individual emotions range from calm and steady to fear and anger. At times, local government employees receive the undeserved brunt of this public anger. In situations such as this leadership is critical. Unfortunately, many government employees and officials have never been trained on how to lead in a time of crisis.

    Author, speaker, and teacher John Maxwell defines a crisis as “an intense time of difficulty requiring a decision that will be a turning point.” Drawing on information from Maxwell’s course, Leading Through Crisis, this two-hour class will discuss the following topics

    • Character during a crisis
    • Battling distractions during a crisis
    • Becoming a good leader during a crisis

    Questions will be presented to the group throughout the presentation in order to learn from the experience of others. Participants will also learn practical ways to maneuver through times of difficulty and adversity.

    Completion of the assessment is needed to get credit toward your CMC/MMC.

    The foundation of any records management program is an organization’s records retention schedule.  Most Colorado Municipalities (almost 200) have adopted the Colorado Municipal Records Retention Schedule (CMRRS).  Well-developed retention schedules offer a number of benefits to any organization including a systematic review and destruction of records to minimize the risks to your organization associated with document retention.  This class will explore the legal requirements of records retention and destruction and offer hands-on examples using the CMRRS.    We will also discuss how to set up an effective records destruction program for your City or town.
